Plenty of volume, not much quality

The idea: Lammens plays short, Mainoo drops to take the ball from the centre-backs, and Tielemans looks for the half-spaces. Mbeumo and Rashford come inside and swap sides so Dalot and Shaw can overlap. It keeps the ball in the opponent's half, but with no one attacking the six-yard box it produced 29 shots worth only 1.60 xG. You need full-backs with stamina and a holding midfielder who screens the break.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Formation 4-3-3, Zirkzee on at 60' not 77' (for Rashford), Baleba on at 60' (for Mainoo). A midfield three and Baleba protect against the carries and transitions that cost the goal, while Zirkzee earlier turns some of the 29 speculative shots into better ones. United's issue was quality, not volume: 29 shots for 1.60 xG. Thiago, 22 league goals last season, is a penalty-box striker who attacks crosses and loose balls close to goal, which is where United's 13 corners and wide rotations were landing.

Twenty-nine shots is a warning sign, not an excuse.
Carrick's case is simple: United had 57% of the ball, 29 shots and 13 corners, and lost to an own goal that followed what he saw as a foul on Cunha. The xG says it was a draw, 1.60 to 1.62. A point was a fair result.
But look at where the xG came from. Fulham needed 12 shots to reach 1.62, and United needed 29 to reach 1.60. United's wide rotations kept the ball in Fulham's half but mostly led to low-value shots. Their best moments were two efforts that hit the post, and the equaliser needed a big deflection off Affengruber.
The goal United conceded is the other half of the story. Read Man Utd's breakdown says it came when United's defensive shape behind the ball "was not fully set", and Neville's complaint was about how United played without the ball. That is the same weakness that let Everton equalise in the 96th minute and Brighton score three unanswered goals. United are dominating territory but not controlling games.
